I make sculpture in response to rhythms in the natural world, especially plant growth forms and rock erosion patterns, but also driftwood, bones and dancing flames.
I usually work with a stoneware clay body mixed with paper or flax fibres. This gives the unfired clay special properties useful to the hand-building process. During the first firing the fibres are burnt away completely leaving behind a lighter, but still strong, purely ceramic object.
The finished surfaces are achieved using a variety of glazes, burnishing, oxide washes, inks and smoke-firings.
